About

Ideas that endure in a time that changes too fast.

We live in an age that rushes. News grows old in hours, opinions shift with the algorithm, and almost everything seems disposable: objects, commitments, even convictions. At that pace it is easy to forget where we came from and, without noticing, to lose sight of where we are going.

Raízes (Portuguese for “roots”) is born of a simple idea: a tree withstands the storm only because its roots run deep. The same is true of a person, a family and a nation. What we have inherited (faith, family, language, culture, respect for work and for one’s given word) is not dead weight from the past. It is what keeps us standing.

To be conservative, for us, is neither to fear the new nor to live on nostalgia. It is to have the prudence to ask, before tearing down a fence, why it was built. It is to prefer common sense to euphoria, and experience to easy promises.

Five roots, five themes

  • Politics: reflections on Brazil, its institutions and the role of the citizen, with seriousness and without shouting.
  • Culture: books, ideas, art and history that help us understand who we are.
  • Faith: the place of religion in personal and public life.
  • Family: the first school, the first government and the first shelter of every person.
  • Everyday life: the small habits and choices in which, in the end, all of this is decided.

Who writes

José Eduardo Figueira Dantas, editor of Raízes. He writes about politics, culture, faith, family and everyday life from a simple conviction: what is good deserves to be conserved, and what needs to change deserves to be thought through calmly.

How we write

Common sense

Making an argument is worth more than making an accusation. We prefer common sense to euphoria.

Respect

This is not a place for hatred or for slogans. Respectful disagreement is welcome.

Corrections

When we get something wrong, we fix it and say so: corrections appear at the end of the piece, with the date.
